FAQ's: What is Senior Cohousing?
Senior cohousing is a vibrant alternative to retirement communities, institutional continuing care, or assisted living facilities for boomers, elders, wise women, empty nesters, and active adults 55+ years young! It has all the characteristics of cohousing, but targeted to suit the lifestyle needs and expectations of the 50+ age demographic. While there are many housing options available to seniors, one of the aspects frequently mentioned as, “missing” within the typical menu of choices is: the sense of belonging or the sense of COMMUNITY.
As with a multi-generational cohousing community, Individually owned homes of varying sizes and types are clustered around a “Common House”. The Common House provides a gathering place and shared amenities, and typically includes guest rooms that may also double as caregiver suites should the need arise. The homes feature universal design options that address the needs and desires of elder lifestyles.
Prospective cohousing homeowners may attend a series of informational workshops sponsored by a local or regional non-profit organizations and led by a certified facilitator. This workshop series provides a fun, interactive way of deciding if this is an option they wish to pursue. Another series of outreach workshops provide an opportunity to meet and interact with future neighbors who share the same vision of a caring community
