"Living a life of purpose, living the good life..."

"Senior or Elder Cohousing offers another choice:  'Aging in Community'.  Private home ownership, shared resources, a place where everyone knows your name, companionship and privacy.  It follows all of the principles of intergenerational cohousing described above except that it is targeted to a market demographic age 50+ with specific needs around aging and end of life issues."

the silver wave

This past year, the boomers-- Americans born between 1946 and 1964 -- started retiring: 77 MILLION of them.  Over the next 23 years, seniors age 65+ will move from being 12% of the population to doubling in size by 2030. When asked what kind of living arrangement they want in their final years an overwhelming number say they want to stay in their homes.  They want to live in their neighborhood surrounded by familiar sights and sounds and people.  They want to “Age in Place”.

For various reasons, this may neither be practicable, feasible nor economical.  While there are many housing options available to seniors one of the aspects frequently mentioned as missing in the current menu of choices is the sense of belonging, the sense of community.

Senior Cohousing is booming for the boomers!  A relatively new arrival in the cohousing fold, already there are three completed senior cohousing communities in the U.S.  The Elder Cohousing Network lists communities for seniors in development in over 17 different cities in the U.S. alone.
